Organize a bicycle collection

100 collections per year

With the help of schools, associations, companies and committed supporters, about 100 bike collections take place every year. You too can organize a collection and make an important contribution to the start of the Velafrica chain of effects. We are happy to support you with organization, communication and logistics.

Serge Goy is one of many Velafrica collection heroes. In this video, he tells us what motivates him to collect bikes for Velafrica.

Ten steps to a successful bicycle collection

  1. When do you want to conduct the collection? Where will it be held? Please contact Mats Gurtner, who manages bike collections, as early as possible. We are by your side with ideas and support and can provide you with all the necessary information and materials.
  2. It is more fun to collect as a team: Think about setting up a group of people to work together on the collection. Ask for helpers at an early stage and find helpers who can offer support during the preparation, on the day of the collection and on the bike removal day.
  3. How will you advertise the bicycle collection? Remember to contact your local media (information sheet from the Gemeinde, regional newspaper, etc.) in good time and ask for an article or an advertisement. We are happy to support you in public relations work and provide you with photos and text. Our leaflet about successful media work contains more helpful tips.
  4. Distribute flyers and put up posters: We will provide you with flyers, posters, flags and suitable material for the advertising campaign and the event itself. Again, please contact Mats Gurtner.
  5. Include your event in the calendar: Add your event to the calendar at your school or workplace. Also check out your Gemeinde website. Entries can often be made under “Events”. We are also happy to refer to your event on our website in the News & Events section.
  6. Mobilize your personal network: Tell your neighbours, acquaintances, work and club colleagues about the upcoming bicycle collection. You can also use social media to help spread the word.
  7. During the collection event: Bicycles are collected, donors receive information about Velafrica’s work and donated bikes are marked with labels that we will send you in advance.
  8. After the collection event: Store the donated bikes in a safe place. If needed, Velafrica can provide security cables and locks.
  9. Velafrica organizes the removal: This usually takes place on the Monday after the collection. If possible, please arrange for volunteers to help us load the bicycles.
  10. Your feedback is important to us: We want to know what went well and where there is potential for improvement. Perhaps you also learnt something special about a donor or their bike. Tell us about it! Please fill out the feedback form after the collection event.
