Short

Velafrica’s vision is a world in which all people can enjoy the benefits of bicycle mobility to improve their lives. To this end, the nonprofit organization collects unused bicycles in Switzerland and Germany and has them repaired or converted into spare parts at work integration enterprises and correctional facilities. Velafrica exports the bicycles and spare parts to partner organizations in several African countries. There, the bicycles help people gain access to education, income and healthcare and create jobs and training opportunities related to bicycles.

Velafrica’s vision is a world in which all people can enjoy the benefits of bicycle mobility to improve their lives. To this end, the nonprofit organization collects approximately 45,000 unused bicycles annually from over 300 collection points in Switzerland and Germany. Depending on their condition, the bicycles are either repaired or dismantled for spare parts, while any unusable components are recycled. In doing so, Velafrica collaborates with around 40 work integration enterprises and correctional facilities.

Velafrica exports the refurbished bicycles and spare parts for a nominal fee to bicycle hubs and bicycle shops in Tanzania, Burkina Faso, Madagascar, Malawi, Ivory Coast, Ghana and The Gambia. Velafrica played a key role in establishing some of these partner organizations to strengthen the local bicycle sector. Additionally, Velafrica supports the training of bicycle mechanics and runs programs to assist schoolchildren and other target groups.

In the regions served, there is high demand for sturdy bicycles from Europe. Many people cannot afford to travel by car or motorbike taxi and walk long distances on foot. Velafrica’s bicycles are an affordable, eco-friendly alternative. They make it easier for people to access education, income and healthcare and simplify the transport of heavy loads.
