Bike for Trees

The «Bike for Trees» project promotes the economic strength of women. At the same time, the project is a means of combating the effects of climate change in Tanzania’s arid north.

In 2023, in collaboration with ABC Impact, we provided the women’s cooperative «Upendo Women’s Group» with 50 bicycles.

The women of the cooperative grow seedlings, which they then transport on their bicycles over long distances. They plant trees at schools, health centers, churches and mosques and other places of communal life.

The women have already planted over 4,000 trees. Their aim is to plant 10,000 trees by 2025.

The women of the cooperative raise the population’s awareness to sustainable environmental practices and support them in growing the seedlings. The trees protect the valuable soil from erosion, store water, provide cooling shade and act as barriers against the wind.

Selling the seedlings gives the women in the cooperative their own income. They use this seed capital to open their own small businesses.

Upamba from the Upendo Women’s Group, for example, has converted her bicycle into a mobile gelateria and uses it to serve the surrounding schools. Farmer Teresia was able to afford new seeds and bring more goods to market thanks to the bicycle. Irene can deliver her home-baked pancakes to her customers more quickly on her bike.
