Since 1993, Velafrica has been collecting unwanted bikes and shipping them to partner organisations in Tanzania, Burkina Faso, Madagascar, South Africa, Ivory Coast, Ghana and Gambia. Annually, more than 50 shipping containers containing over 25’000 prepared and roadworthy Swiss bicycles arrive in Africa. They facilitate access to school and education, medical facilities and workplaces and help with the transport of heavy loads. In addition to mobility, Velafrica promotes the development of bicycle workshops and the training of mechanics. Jobs and income opportunities are created in bicycle assembly, repair and sales.
In Switzerland, Velafrica works with institutions for the enforcement of measures and social institutions that engage the unemployed and people with disabilities. Integration work is successfully combined with development cooperation.
Donate bicycles: Good recycled bikes from Switzerland continue to be in high demand. Mountainbikes are particularly popular because the roads in destination countries are often unpaved. However, we accept all types of bikes and are able to reuse every good bike. Bikes in poor condition are dismantled and individual components are used for spare parts. Approximately 400 collection points across Switzerland accept bicycles for Velafrica.
Short
Velafrica successfully combines integration work in Switzerland with development cooperation in Africa. The non-profit organization has been collecting unused bicycles since 1993, repairing them in social institutions in Switzerland and then exporting them to partner organizations in seven African countries.
